Becoming a radio amateur

Before an amateur radio station may be set up and used, it is necessary to obtain a licence from the Radio Communications Agency (RA) of the Department of Trade and Industry, which is the licensing authority in the UK.  Full details are given in the RA publication "How to Become a Radio Amateur (RA190)".  This is available free of charge from the Document Distribution Centre, Radio Communications Agency.
