Preferred values

The three common ranges of basic 'preferred values' for components are list in Table 2.4. The preferred values which are normally available, are multiples of the basic values between 1 and 10⁷Ω, for example 4.7Ω, 47Ω, 470Ω, 4.7kΩ, 47kΩ, 470kΩ and 4.7MΩ (20% tolerance) resistors.

The manufacture of preferred values only is general for resistors, but less so for capacitors, particularly above1μF. By use of more than one preferred value, it is possibly to create any desired value.
