Transmitters

Speech processors

The speech waveform has a high peak but quite low average value. When this is amplified to increase the modulation level, excess deviation, distortion and spreading signal will occur at the peaks. The action of a speech clipper is to limit the peaks. The resulting waveform is filtered as it is now somewhat distorted by the clipping action.

Most modem transmitters incorporate a moderate amount of speech processing which can be switched in and out.
